Science Teacher Preparation Program
The University of Arkansas site has one major theme: You never know who is going to be a teacher. In response to this belief, all of our introductory courses are targeted for improvement, and by the end of the project, each class will have a substantial component that models excellent physics instruction. Since the beginning of the project, the number of graduating physics majors has doubled (what is good for teachers is good for everyone), and about 10% of the graduates go on to teach at the 7-12 level. In addition, elementary education is a major focus, since elementary teachers are a particularly vital link in the chain to improving science education overall. Physics for Elementary Teachers (PET), using curriculum developed at San Diego State University, is now offered for preservice teachers.
Work on the PhysTEC project at the University of Arkansas is funded by
the National Science Foundation.
