The Department of Physics and Astronomy is dedicated to continuing to provide the training in physics for individuals that wish to pursue a career in teaching physics or physical science at the K-12 level.   In January, 2008, the department hired a senior faculty member whose primary research interest is physics education.  That faculty member was charged with modifying our introductory physics courses so that they have a more student-centered, interactive environment (Studio Physics Model).  This program was initiated in Fall, 2008 and is steadily expanding.  It provides an excellent environment for training undergraduate students with an interest in teaching.  We plan to continue to nourish this effort.

The department is also reviewing its undergraduate track for majors, and is planning to explore possibilities for adding possible tracks explicitly designed as a teacher preparation track.
